The Muhammad Ali dynasty was a famous family of rulers. They ruled Egypt and Sudan for many years. This family came from Albania, which is in the Ottoman Empire.

Their rule lasted from the 1800s until the middle of the 1900s. They changed how these lands were governed. They turned Egypt into a very strong regional power. This dynasty is named after its first leader, Muhammad Ali.

Muhammad Ali began his journey as a military commander. He was part of the Ottoman Albanian army. He was sent to help drive Napoleon's forces out of Egypt. After the French left, he worked with a leader named Omar Makram.

In 1805, he rose to power with his Albanian troops. He became the Wāli, or Governor, of Egypt. He wanted to build a vast kingdom. He even took the higher title of Khedive. This title was a special honor for a leader.

Muhammad Ali worked hard to change his new home. He built a military state with a very large army. About four percent of the people served in the military.

He also conquered Sudan during the first half of his rule. This helped build the foundations of the modern Sudanese state. His successors, like Ibrahim Pasha, continued this work. They used the title Khedive to show their power. The Ottoman Sultan finally recognized this title in 1867.

Things became more difficult for the family later on. In 1882, the United Kingdom invaded and occupied Egypt. The British wanted to support Khedive Tewfik against his opponents.

Even though the family still ruled, the British held the real power. The British also made Sudan a place under joint rule. This was called an Anglo-Egyptian Condominium. Many Egyptians did not like this arrangement. They wanted the Nile Valley to stay united.

As time passed, the titles of the rulers changed again. During World War I, the leaders were called Sultans. Later, in 1922, Egypt became a kingdom. The rulers were then called Kings.

One of the last kings was Farouk I. Many people were unhappy with his rule. There was also a lot of anger about the British presence. In 1952, a revolution changed everything. The monarchy ended in 1953. Egypt became a republic, and the dynasty's rule was over.
