He led a huge uprising against the wealthy lords and the government. This movement happened between 1670 and 1671. Many people joined him because life in Russia was very difficult. Taxes were high, and the government was taking more from the people. Razin wanted to fight for the lower classes and the poor.

Razin's journey began with many small steps and adventures. In 1652, he went on a long trip to a monastery. Later, he led a group of Cossacks on a mission. He eventually lived in the marshes between the Tishina and Ilovlya rivers. There, he took money from boats passing on the Volga River. He even traveled to the Caspian Sea to find new places.

His life moved from being a traveler to being a powerful leader.

Russia was changing a lot during the 1600s. The Romanov dynasty had recently started ruling the land. The tsars, who were the kings, were making their power much stronger. This meant that other groups of leaders were losing their influence. At the same time, a law in 1649 made life harder for peasants. This law helped start a system called serfdom. Many people felt they were being treated very unfairly by the nobility.

Razin became a very famous warrior during his travels. In 1667, he captured the city of Yaitsk by using a disguise. He and his friends pretended to be pilgrims going to a cathedral. Once they were inside, they opened the gates for their troops. He also led a long trip to Persia that lasted eighteen months. During this time, he fought battles and visited different cities.

These adventures made people think he had special powers.

In 1670, Razin started a massive rebellion against the government. He led an army of almost 7,000 men down the Volga River. He captured the city of Astrakhan and turned it into a republic. In a republic, the people have a say in how things work. Razin wanted to create a land where everyone was equal. However, the tsar sent a large army to stop him.
