He was born to a Cossack landowner in a place called Zimoveyskaya. Cossacks are groups of people who often serve as soldiers. Pugachev joined the military when he was 17 years old. He served in two major wars during his early life. He fought in the Seven Years' War and the Russo-Turkish War. During this time, he became a skilled soldier and earned the rank of khorunzhiy. This rank was similar to a company commander.

After his military service, Pugachev had a very difficult time. In 1770, he left the army to go home because he was sick. He became a fugitive, which means a person who runs away to avoid being caught. He was arrested several times by the authorities. However, he managed to escape many times. He even used tricks to get free from people in charge. He spent years moving around and living in different places. During this time, he gained popularity among peasants and Cossacks. These people were unhappy with how things were in Russia.

In 1773, Pugachev started a massive uprising against Catherine the Great.

He used a clever plan to gain power. He told everyone that he was actually the late Tsar Peter III. Peter III was a former ruler who had died years before. Pugachev promised to end serfdom, which was a system where peasants had very little freedom. He also promised to help the Cossacks and restore old religious beliefs. Because of these promises, he built a huge army. His forces moved quickly through the lands between the Volga River and the Urals. They even captured and burned the city of Kazan in 1774.

The rebellion faced a major turning point in August 1774. A general named Johann von Michelsohnen led a large army against the rebels. The two sides fought a big battle near Tsaritsyn. The rebels suffered a crushing defeat in this fight. Many people were killed or taken prisoner during the battle. Shortly after this loss, Pugachev's own Cossacks captured him. They turned him over to the Russian government. He was sent to Moscow and was executed in January 1775.

Even though the revolt ended, Pugachev's story stayed in history. Many famous writers wrote about him. Alexander Pushkin wrote a history book and a novel called The Captain's Daughter. The rebellion changed how Catherine the Great ruled her lands. She decided not to make certain reforms for the peasants. Today, you can still see his name in places like Pugachev Square. There is also a museum dedicated to his life in Uralsk.
