Hadji Murad was a famous leader from the Avar people. He lived in the North Caucasus mountains. This area includes places like Dagestan and Chechnya. From 1811 to 1864, these people fought against the Russian Empire. They did not want to become part of the empire. Murad was a brave commander during this difficult time.

His life was full of many changes. At first, Murad worked with the Russian Empire. He wanted to stop a group called the Murids. However, a rival named Akhmet Khan worked against him. The Russians decided to arrest Murad. He escaped by jumping over a narrow mountain ledge. The deep snow broke his fall and saved his life. He stayed hidden for the whole winter.

After his escape, Murad joined a leader named Imam Shamil. Shamil gave him the high rank of naib. Murad became a very well-known fighter. Some Russians even called him "the red devil." They gave him this name because he wore red clothes. A false rumor spread about him during a raid at Temirkhan-Shura. People wrongly said he had done something very bad to soldiers in a hospital.

In 1851, a big fight broke out between Murad and Shamil. Shamil wanted Murad to be killed. Murad escaped, but his family was taken as captives. He surrendered to the Russians to try to save them. He asked for guns and men to help him. The Russians did not give him what he needed. On April 24, 1852, Murad tried to escape again. He was caught in a fight and died.

Many people remember Hadji Murad today because of stories. The writer Leo Tolstoy wrote a famous book about him. This book is called "Hadji Murad." It tells the story of his struggle with the empire. An Italian movie called "The White Warrior" was also made about him. In 2017, people in Dagestan asked to bring his remains home. They wanted to reunite his family in the Qakh District.
