Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov was a famous Russian general during the 1800s. He was born into a noble family in Moscow. His father owned a small estate with 150 serfs. As a child, Aleksey was officially enrolled in a guard unit. This was a common practice for children of noble families. He attended a boarding school at Moscow University from 1784 to 1791. Aleksey's life was not always easy. In 1799, he was arrested for a conspiracy against Tsar Paul I. He was sent into exile in Kostroma for two years. During this hard time, he taught himself Latin. After the new emperor, Alexander I, took power in 1801, he pardoned Aleksey. He returned to the military and studied the work of Alexander Suvorov. Aleksey became a very skilled leader of artillery. He was promoted to major general in 1808. He eventually became a full artillery general.

He became a hero during the Napoleonic Wars. These were large wars against the French leader, Napoleon. Aleksey fought in many important battles. He fought at Austerlitz, Eylau, and Kulm. He was also at the Battle of Borodino in 1812. During that battle, he led a charge to take back a fort called the Great Redoubt. He was wounded during this brave action. For his courage, he received the Order of St. Anna. He also won the Prussian Iron Cross.

In 1816, Aleksey was given a new job in the Caucasus. This is a large mountain region. He was the commander-in-chief of Russian forces in Georgia. He worked hard to build new things there. He founded the towns of Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk. He also built the fortress of Grozny in 1818. Aleksey helped build new roads like the Georgian Military Road. While his soldiers loved him, many others did not. Aleksey used very harsh and violent ways to fight. He treated the local people in the Caucasus very unfairly. Some historians say his actions were like state-sponsored terrorism. Because of these hard methods, he was removed from his job in 1827. He was replaced by Ivan Paskevich. Aleksey lived a quiet life near Oryol for many years. He died in Moscow and left behind his memoirs. These books tell the story of his long life.
