At first, Murad worked with the Russian Empire. He did this to fight a different group. But a rival named Akhmet Khan made the Russians doubt him. They tried to arrest Murad. He escaped by jumping over a mountain ledge. The snow saved his life. He hid all winter.

Murad then joined a leader named Imam Shamil. He became a naib, which is a high rank. Some people called him "the red devil" because of his red clothes. Later, Murad had a fight with Shamil. Shamil wanted to kill him. Murad escaped, but his family was held captive.

Murad asked the Russians to help him save his family. They did not give him guns or men. In 1852, Murad tried to run away. He was caught in a fight and died. A writer named Leo Tolstoy wrote a famous book about him. The book tells the story of Murad and his fight with the Russian Empire.
