The fighting lasted for many years. It happened under three different Russian Tsars. A famous leader named Shamil led many mountain fighters. He led his people from 1834 until 1859. Shamil was very good at leading his troops. He even won big battles against the Russian army.

The war changed the region forever. Many people were forced to leave their homes. This was called mass emigration. Most of these people moved to the Ottoman Empire. Life was very hard for them in new lands. They faced hunger and many diseases.
