These neighbors did not want Poland to be a strong or fair country. They wanted to keep control over the Polish people and their laws. Because of this, many people felt their home was being stolen.

To fight back, the Polish people needed a plan. They had tried to make a new constitution in 1791. This was a set of rules to make the government better.

However, Russia and Prussia did not like these new rules. They thought a strong Poland would be a threat to them. The Russian army entered Poland to stop the changes. This led to a war that left Poland much smaller and weaker.

A famous leader named Tadeusz Kościuszko decided to lead the people. He was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.

In March 1794, he went to the town square in Kraków. He gave a big speech to start the uprising.
