This era is linked to the Enlightenment, a time of new ideas.

Catherine's journey to the throne was very long. She was born as Princess Sophie in Germany in 1729.

Her family did not have much money at first. She was married to the future Peter III in 1745. To prepare for her new life, she studied very hard. She learned the Russian language and joined the Orthodox Church. She even survived a serious illness called pneumonia. After her husband, she took power through a coup d'etat.

As Empress, Catherine used many people to help her rule. She relied on noble favorites like Grigory Orlov and Grigory Potemkin. She also worked with very successful military leaders. Generals like Alexander Suvorov and Pyotr Rumyantsev helped her expand the empire. Admirals like Samuel Greig and Fyodor Ushakov led her navy. These leaders helped Russia grow through both fighting and talking with other lands.

In the west, she helped change the land of Poland. In the south, Russia won wars against the Ottoman Empire. This allowed Russia to take the Crimean Khanate. She also helped colonize New Russia near the Black and Azov seas. In the east, Russians became the first Europeans to reach Alaska. She ordered the building of many new towns. Some of these include Yekaterinoslav, Kherson, Nikolayev, and Sevastopol.

Catherine wanted to make Russia modern like Western Europe. She supported new ways of thinking and learning. She even started the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens. This was the first school in Europe for women that the state paid for.

However, not everyone had a good life. Many poor workers, called serfs, were treated very unfairly. This caused big rebellions, such as Pugachev's Rebellion. Even with these hard times, her influence changed Russia forever.
