Anna Ioannovna was a powerful leader in Russian history.

She served as a ruler in two different ways. First, she was the regent of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. She held this role from 1711 until 1730. Later, she became the Empress of Russia from 1730 to 1740. Her time as ruler is often called a "dark era" by people in Russia. Much of her work followed ideas from her uncle, Peter the Great.

Anna grew up in a very disciplined home in Moscow. Her mother, Praskovia Saltykova, was a very strict woman. She taught her daughters to value virtue and charity. Anna studied French, German, and religious texts. She also learned music and dancing. As she grew up, she became known as an obstinate girl. She eventually moved to St. Petersburg with her family. There, she fell in love with the grand life of the royal court.

At age 17, Anna married Frederick William, the Duke of Courland. Their wedding in 1710 was a very grand event. Her uncle gave her a dowry of 200,000 roubles for the marriage. Sadly, the Duke died only a few weeks later in January 1711. Anna then moved to the capital of Courland, which is now Jelgava. She ruled that province for almost twenty years. During this time, she worked with an adviser named Count Peter Bestuzhev.

In 1730, the male line of the Romanov family ended. This happened when Tsar Peter II died without any children. A group called the Supreme Privy Council chose Anna to be the new Empress. They wanted her to follow a set of rules called "Conditions." These rules said she could not make big decisions alone. They wanted her to follow their advice on taxes and war. However, Anna did not want to be limited by these rules.

She tore up the document and took full power for herself.

Anna left a lasting mark on Russian institutions. In 1731, she founded the Cadet Corps to train young boys for the military. This school provided many years of important studies. She also continued to fund the Russian Academy of Science. This academy helped people study subjects like math, botany, and astronomy. The school even helped organize the Bering Sea Expedition to study the land.
