He was born on September 22, 1869, in Saint Petersburg. His father, Nikolay Krasnov, was a lieutenant-general. His grandfather, Ivan Krasnov, was also a general. This family history meant Pyotr grew up around the military. In 1888, he finished school at the Pavlovsk Military School. He then joined a special regiment in the Imperial Russian Army. He later became a famous writer about his travels.

Krasnov spent time traveling through East Asia. He went to Mongolia, China, and Japan. He wrote many articles for a newspaper called Russkii Invalid. One famous article was titled "Fourteen Days in Japan." In his writing, he shared his views on the Japanese army. He thought the soldiers were brave but not well led. He also wrote about their discipline and their health. These articles were so popular that the War Ministry helped him turn them into a book.

During World War I, Krasnov held many important roles. He led the 2nd Combined Cossack Division starting in 1915. He also led the 3rd Cavalry Corps in 1917. During a large battle called the Brusilov offensive, he was injured. A bullet hit his leg during the fighting in 1916. After the October Revolution in 1917, things in Russia changed quickly. Krasnov tried to lead Cossack troops to stop the Bolshevik revolt. However, he was eventually taken prisoner by Bolshevik troops.

Krasnov became a major leader during the Russian Civil War. In May 1918, he was elected Ataman of the Don Cossack Host. An Ataman is a leader of a Cossack group. He wanted the Don region to have more power to rule itself. To help his army, he worked with Germany. This made other leaders, like General Anton Denikin, distrust him. Krasnov's army had about 40,000 men and many guns.

He fought hard to protect his land from the Red Army. Sadly, his troops were involved in the White Terror. They killed between 25,000 and 40,000 people in the Don Province.

After the civil war ended, Krasnov lived in exile. He moved to Germany and then to France in 1923. During World War II, he made the choice to work with Nazi Germany. He helped them move Cossack forces to fight the Soviet Union. This was part of an event called Operation Barbarossa. After the war ended, the Soviet authorities brought him back. He was executed on January 17, 1947.
