The White movement was a major group during the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922. They were known as the Whites to distinguish them from their enemies, the Reds. The Reds were the Bolsheviks who led the October Revolution in Russia.

The Whites acted as a system of governments called the Russian State. They often functioned as a military dictatorship. Their fighting forces were known as the White Army or the White Guard. This movement was a way for people to fight against the new Bolshevik rule.

The movement was made of many different types of people. Most were conservative officers from the old Russian Empire. Some members were monarchists who wanted a king or emperor. Others were liberals or republicans who had different political ideas.

Even though they disagreed on many things, they all shared a common enemy in the Bolsheviks. In November 1918, they united under one leader named Alexander Kolchak. They wanted to restore the old borders of the Russian Empire. They also believed in a very religious idea called "Holy Russia."

Many leaders in the movement used religion to explain their fight. They did not see the war as just a political struggle. Instead, they saw it as a battle between good and evil. They felt the Revolution was a form of impurity or darkness.

To them, defending the old ways was a matter of faith. This made the war feel very intense for the soldiers. They often used religious words to describe their difficult journeys. One famous march was even compared to a religious path of sacrifice.

There were many hard and unfair parts to the White movement. The movement was often antisemitic, which means they were prejudiced against Jewish people. Some White leaders wrongly blamed Jewish people for the Revolution.

This led to a period called the White Terror. During this time, many non-Russian ethnic groups were targeted and mistreated. The movement also showed a lot of nationalism and xenophobia. These actions caused great suffering for many different people living in the empire.

After the Civil War ended, the White movement lost its power. Many people who belonged to the movement had to leave Russia. These people lived in other countries and were called émigrés.

They formed small groups to keep their ideas alive. Some even tried to fight again using different methods. These communities stayed active for a long time. They only truly faded away after the Soviet Union fell in 1990 and 1991.
