The White movement, often called the Whites, was a major faction in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922. They fought against the Bolsheviks, who were known as the Reds. The Bolsheviks had led the October Revolution in Russia.

The Whites functioned as a system of governments called the Russian State. This administration often operated as a military dictatorship. Their fighting forces were known as the White Army or the White Guard. They were primarily composed of conservative officers from the former Russian Empire.

The movement was not a single, unified group with one set of beliefs. It included many different political opinions. Some members were monarchists who wanted to restore the Tsar. Others were republicans or liberals who preferred different forms of government. Even some ultra-nationalists, known as the Black Hundreds, were part of the movement. Despite these differences, they united on an authoritarian platform in November 1918. They chose Alexander Kolchak as their principal leader during this time.

The White movement shared several core values and cultural traits. Most members were conservative officers who distrusted liberal or democratic politics. They often showed a dislike for industrial civilization and modern technology. They also valued clericalism, which is a strong focus on religious institutions. The movement was driven by nationalism and a desire to restore the old imperial borders. This goal was summarized by their refusal to accept the right of self-determination for other groups.

Religion played a massive role in how the Whites viewed their struggle. They did not see the war as a simple political disagreement. Instead, they viewed it as a spiritual battle between Good and Evil. They often used the term "Holy Russia" to describe their ideal nation. To many Whites, the Revolution was a form of religious defilement or blasphemy. They believed the conflict was a fight of God against Satan.

This religious worldview made their military actions feel like an article of faith.

However, the movement was also characterized by significant violence and prejudice. The Whites were largely antisemitic, meaning they held deep prejudice against Jewish people. Many White generals wrongly claimed the Revolution was the result of a Jewish conspiracy.

This led to the White Terror, a period of violence against non-Russian ethnic groups. These actions were fueled by nationalism and xenophobia. Such events caused immense suffering for many people within the former Russian Empire.

Leadership within the movement changed over time. After Kolchak, other leaders like Anton Denikin took charge. Denikin tried to move away from extreme monarchist slogans to attract more support. He spoke of a future "National Assembly" instead of restoring the Tsar immediately. Later, Baron Pyotr Wrangel led the movement during its final stages. Wrangel issued a manifesto that suggested the people should choose their own "master," which many interpreted as a call for a new Tsar.

After their military defeat, the Whites were expelled from the newly formed USSR. Many members became part of an émigré community living in exile overseas. Some formed armed groups to fight guerrilla warfare within Russia. During World War II, some former commanders even collaborated with Nazi Germany.

The White émigré community remained active in various organizations for decades. These groups only truly faded after the fall of communist states in 1989 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990 and 1991.
