In 1918, the country of Finland was going through a very big change. It had recently become independent from the Russian Empire. However, the people living there could not agree on how to run their new nation. This disagreement led to a conflict known as the Finnish Civil War.

Some people called it the War of Independence. Others used names like the Class War or the Red Rebellion. Even today, people use different names to describe what happened during that time.

Two main groups fought for control of the land. The first group was called the Reds. They were mostly workers from cities and farms. They were led by the Social Democratic Party and had help from Russian bolsheviks.

The second group was called the Whites. They were mostly landowners and middle-class people. They controlled the rural areas in the north and center of the country.

The fighting happened in a specific order. In February 1918, the Reds started a large offensive. They used weapons supplied by Soviet Russia.

The Whites responded with their own offensive in March. In April, the German Empire sent military groups to help the Whites.

Major battles took place in places like Tampere and Viipuri. The Whites won those big battles. German troops also won important battles in Helsinki and Lahti. These victories helped the Whites win the war.

This war was a very sad time for many people. About 38,000 people died during the conflict. Most of those who died in the fighting were Reds.

Many other people died in prison camps. About 12,500 Red prisoners died from disease and not having enough food.

These losses divided the nation for many decades. It was a hard time for families across the whole country.

After the fighting stopped, Finland changed into a new kind of state. It became a sovereign and democratic country. This means the people had a say in their government through laws.

At first, there was a plan to have a king led by Germany. That plan ended when Germany lost World War I. Over many years, the people worked to heal their country. They used calm politics and social compromises to bring everyone together again.
