It is known for having a huge amount of hair. The hair is swept upwards and away from the face. This hair sits high over the forehead. Sometimes the hair is also swept up around the sides. It can also be swept up at the back. This style is used by both men and women. It is a way to create a lot of height and volume.

Making this style takes some special steps.

For women, stylists often use a roll of false hair. The person's own hair is combed up and over that roll. They might also use a method called backcombing. This is also known as ratting at the roots. This process helps the hair stand up at the top. Then, the hair is combed over the ratted parts. The front is often styled into a curl that goes straight back.

This hairstyle has a very long history in France. In 1680, a woman called the Duchess of Fontanges created a style called the Fontange. She did this to please King Louis XIV. This style added height to the hair and lasted for 20 years. Later, in the 1770s and 1780s, hair became very tall again. This happened during the time of Marie-Antoinette. The name pompadour comes from Madame de Pompadour. She lived from 1721 to 1764. However, she did not actually wear her hair this way.

Many famous people have worn this look.

In the 1950s, stars like Elvis Presley and James Dean made it popular for men. It was a main look for a group called greasers. In Japan, people call it the Regent hairstyle. You might see it in anime or manga. In the 21st century, many celebrities still use it. These include stars like David Beckham and Justin Timberlake. Even the character Jay Gatsby in a famous novel had this hair.

This hairstyle connects to many different cultures. In the United States, many Latinos wore it from the 1930s to the 1960s. In the 1980s, it was part of the rockabilly culture. This group loved things like vintage cars and folk music. There are even versions like the quiff or the psychobilly wedge. Some people mix it with other styles. For example, the punch perm mixes it with an afro. It is a style that keeps changing and returning.
