A mohawk is a very bold hairstyle.

In the most common version, a person shaves both sides of their head. This leaves a long strip of hair running down the center. This look has existed for thousands of years in many places. People often wear it to show they are different from others. Today, it is a famous look for the punk subculture.

There are many ways to make this style. A standard mohawk has hair that stands up from the forehead to the neck. Some people choose a reverse mohawk instead. This version shaves a strip down the middle but leaves hair on the sides.

Another version is called a fauxhawk. This style has a small spike in the middle. It does not require shaving the sides of the head. Some people even wear a euro-hawk, where the top hair is long enough to cover the sides.

The name comes from the Mohawk people of North America. They lived in the Mohawk Valley in Upstate New York. However, the history is a bit different than many people think. The Mohawk and the Iroquois confederacy actually wore a square of hair on the back of the head. They did not shave their hair to do this. Instead, they pulled the hair out in small tufts. They often used three braids to decorate the hair.

This hairstyle has appeared all over the world throughout history. In Ireland, a 2,000-year-old man was found with a mohawk. He used plant oil and pine resin to style it.

In the 16th century, Ukrainian Cossacks wore a strip called an oseledets. They often tied it in a topknot. During World War II, American paratroopers wore mohawks to look tough. They belonged to the 17th and 101st Airborne Divisions. In the 1950s, jazz musicians like Sonny Rollins also wore the style.

Many famous people have worn different versions of this look. Joseph Grisamore holds a record for the tallest full mohawk. Kazuhiro Watanabe holds the record for the tallest mohican hairstyle.
