A mohawk is a bold and distinctive hairstyle.

In its most common form, a person shaves both sides of the head. This leaves a single strip of long hair in the center. The hair typically runs from the forehead to the nape of the neck. This style is often used to express non-conformity. It is a way for people to show they are different. Today, it is widely associated with the punk subculture.

There are several ways to create or modify this look. A standard mohawk features an upright strip of hair. A reverse mohawk, or "nohawk," does the opposite. It shaves a strip down the middle but leaves hair on the sides. A fauxhawk is a more subtle version. It creates a small spike in the middle without shaving the sides. Some people also wear a euro-hawk. In this style, the top hair is long enough to cover the shorter sides.

The name "mohawk" comes from the Mohawk nation of North America. This indigenous group originally lived in the Mohawk Valley of Upstate New York. However, the history of the name is complex. Many people associate the name with Hollywood films. For example, the 1939 film *Drums Along the Mohawk* helped popularize the term. In reality, the Mohawk and the Iroquois confederacy wore hair differently. They wore a square of hair on the back of the crown. They did not shave this hair. Instead, they plucked it out in small tufts. This created three short braids.

These traditional braids held deep cultural meaning. The three braids are represented in the Gustoweh, a traditional Mohawk headdress. The Gustoweh features three upright eagle feathers. These feathers symbolize the three braids of the past. Other groups, like the Pawnee, wore styles that look more like the modern mohawk. The Pawnee lived in present-day Nebraska and northern Kansas. The term "Mohican" is also used, especially in the United Kingdom. This name became popular due to a 1971 BBC television adaptation. Interestingly, that show featured characters representing the Huron people.

This hairstyle has appeared across the globe for thousands of years. In Ireland, researchers found the Clonycavan Man. He was a male bog body from 2,000 years ago. He had a mohawk styled with pine resin and plant oil. In northern Libya, the Macai tribe also used this style. The historian Herodotus described them shaving their heads close to the skin. In the 16th century, Ukrainian Cossacks wore a central strip called an oseledets. They often tied this hair into a topknot or braid.

During the 20th century, the hairstyle took on new meanings. American paratroopers used the look to intimidate enemies. This was seen in the 17th and 101st Airborne Divisions during World War II. Some American troops also wore it during the Vietnam War. In the 1950s, jazz musicians like Sonny Rollins wore the style. By the 1970s, it became a symbol for the punk subculture. Even today, people hold records for the tallest versions of this hair. Joseph Grisamore is known as the "Mohawk King" for his tall mohawk. Kazuhiro Watanabe holds the record for the tallest mohican hairstyle.

Many famous figures have adopted various versions of the style. The actor and wrestler Mr. T is a very recognizable example.

Professional athletes also use it, such as Brazilian footballer Neymar. Even political leaders like Gabriel Boric, the President of Chile, have been noted for their hair. From ancient tribes to modern rock stars, the mohawk remains a powerful way to stand out.
