Bangs (hair)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bangs are short locks of hair. They fall over the front hairline. Most bangs cover the forehead. They often sit just above the eyebrows. People call them a fringe in some places. This name comes from hair that looks like trim on a shawl.

You can cut them straight across. Some people shape them like an arc. Others leave them looking ragged. Bangs are a way to change how a face looks.

Many people have worn bangs throughout history. Men and women wore them in ancient Egypt. They were also seen in ancient Greece and Rome. Art from the Middle Ages shows these styles too. During the Renaissance, European men still wore them. However, they went out of style for women then. In the 1600s, some clergy even warned against them. They thought bangs showed too much vanity.

Bangs became popular again in the Victorian era. Many women wore them with curls. In the 1880s, a style called the Alexandra fringe arrived. It was named for Alexandra of Denmark. This style used a mass of short, frizzy hair. In the United States, young female immigrants used bangs too. They used the hair to hide skin marks like acne. This helped them feel more like authentic Americans.

Different famous people have worn many styles. Mamie Eisenhower wore short, waved bangs. Audrey Hepburn was known for her pixie cut. Men did not wear bangs very often for a long time. This changed around 1963 with the Beatles. Their hair made the look popular for men. In 2007, thick and blunt bangs became a huge trend. The model Kate Moss helped start this revival.

Hair is a big part of how we look. A 2022 study by Park and Jang looked at this. They found hair accounts for over 70% of an appearance. They matched five hairline shapes to different styles. Choppy bangs work well for round hairlines. Feather bangs add softness to angular hairlines. Blunt bangs look bold on triangular hairlines. See-through bangs are light for flat hairlines.
