People can wear them alone or with other hair. Some men grow a moustache with them. This style is sometimes called friendly mutton chops. If the hair grows all the way across the chin, it is no longer sideburns. Then, it becomes a beard or a chin curtain. These different styles show how much a person wants to change their look.

Many people have used sideburns to show who they are. In the 16th century, men in Mexico and Colombia wore braided sideburns. They called these balcarrotas. These long braids were a mark of pride and vanity. Later, many heroes in South America wore them too. Names like José de San Martín and Manuel Belgrano are famous for this look. You can even see their sideburns on coins and banknotes.

History shows that sideburns have been around for a very long time. We can see them on Roman masks from the 1st Century. One Roman named Elagabalus is shown with sideburns and a moustache. The word "sideburns" actually comes from a different name. It is a change of the word "burnsides." This name honors Ambrose Burnside. He was a general during the American Civil War. He was known for thick sideburns that joined a moustache.

Styles change based on what is happening in the world. In World War I, men had to shave their faces. They did this so gas masks could fit tightly. Sideburns became popular again in the 1950s. Actor Marlon Brando wore them in a movie. Elvis Presley also helped make them famous. Many young people wore them to look rebellious or tough.

Today, sideburns are still seen in many different places. They are a common look for many rock musicians. Some famous musicians like Neil Young and Lemmy have worn them. You can also see them on world leaders. People like Emmanuel Macron and Javier Milei wear them today. Sometimes people wear them to look old-fashioned or cool. They have remained a part of how people choose to look.
