Bangs are locks of hair that fall over the forehead.

Bangs

In some places, people call them a fringe. This name comes from hair that looks like trim on a shawl. Bangs can be cut straight across. They can also be shaped like an arc or look ragged.

Many people wore bangs in the past. Men and women wore them in ancient Egypt and Rome. In the 1880s, a style called the Alexandra fringe became popular. It was a mass of short, frizzy hair. In the United States, young women used bangs to hide skin marks. This helped them feel more like Americans.

Men did not wear bangs often for a long time. This changed in 1963. The Beatles wore them and made the look popular for men. Today, people use social media to find new styles. Some people like curtain bangs.

Research shows that hair helps shape how people see us. One study looked at how hair fits different face shapes. For example, choppy bangs can look good on round faces. Blunt bangs can look bold on triangular faces. See-through bangs are light and airy. These styles help people find a look they love.
