The hair is cut straight around the head. It usually stays at the jaw or above the shoulders. Many people wear it with a fringe, which is hair that hangs over the forehead.

For a long time, women in the West wore long hair. A few people wore short hair even before World War I.

The French actress Polaire wore short, dark hair in 1910. Later, the bob became very popular. It was easy for women doing war work.

A Polish hairdresser named Antoine de Paris helped make it famous. He said the style was inspired by Joan of Arc. In the 1920s, he made the "shingle cut." This was a style where the hair at the back of the neck was cut very short.

Many famous people wore the bob. This included Coco Chanel and Eleanor Roosevelt. In the 1960s, the style became popular again. It was worn by many singers and designers.
