She was a very successful businesswoman. She was known for her work with Queen Marie Antoinette. Bertin was the first celebrated fashion designer in France. She helped make Paris the center of fashion for all of Europe.

Bertin made many different styles of clothing. She created large, fancy gowns. Some of these dresses were very heavy. They were so heavy they had to be carried on a stretcher! She also made a style called the chemise à la Reine. This was a lighter gown made of silk or cotton.

Bertin was also famous for amazing hairstyles. She worked with the Queen's hairdresser to make tall hair. These styles were called poufs. They could be three feet high! People decorated the hair with many objects. Some hair showed scenes from news or ships. Bertin also made fashion dolls called Pandores. These dolls were made of wax or porcelain. They helped show new styles to people far away.
