He was celebrated as a symbol of Italian melody on a global scale. Throughout his career, he sold over 100 million records worldwide. This massive success made him one of the most successful Italian songwriters of all time. His work bridged the gap between traditional Italian sounds and international pop music. He helped define a specific era of melodic songwriting that resonated across many different borders.

Cutugno's musical development began with a focus on percussion. He started his professional career as a drummer before transitioning into songwriting and singing. At age 19, he founded his first musical group. He later formed the disco band Albatros alongside Lino Losito and Mario Limongelli.

As a songwriter, he utilized a process of composing lyrics and music for other major stars. He contributed to the success of artists like Joe Dassin and Dalida. One of his compositions for Dalida, "Lunedì, martedì... Laissez-moi danser," achieved Platinum record status. This ability to write for others established his reputation as a master of the craft.

His career is defined by his deep connection to major musical competitions. He participated in the Sanremo Music Festival a record 15 times. This high number of appearances placed him among only five artists to reach that milestone. He won the Sanremo competition in 1980 with the song "Solo noi" (Only us). However, he was also famous for his many close calls. He finished in second place during six different editions of the festival. These frequent runner-up finishes earned him the nickname "the eternal second" (l'eterno secondo).

Cutugno achieved his greatest international recognition through two specific songs and a major contest victory. In 1983, he released "L'Italian," which remains his most famous international hit. The song used a refrain about being a "true Italian" to celebrate social traits of his home country. This helped the song become very popular with Italian expatriates living abroad. In 1990, he represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. He won the contest with his original ballad, "Insieme: 1992" (Together: 1992). This song celebrated European political integration and the formation of the European Union. At age 46, he became the oldest winner of the contest at that time.

Beyond singing, Cutugno was a versatile entertainer in the television industry. In 1987, he began a successful career as a presenter by co-hosting the Sunday show "Fantastico" with Lino Banfi. He continued to appear on television throughout his life, including a role as a coach on the musical show "Amici" in 2018. His influence even extended to the digital world. In 2014, a Facebook page dedicated to him became an internet phenomenon. This phenomenon was so significant that it became the subject of a study by the Institute for Advanced Study in Pavia.

His popularity was not limited to Europe, as he maintained a strong presence in many other regions. He frequently toured the United States, performing in cities like New York and Atlantic City. He also completed three tours of Australia. Cutugno found great success in countries such as Germany, Spain, Romania, Turkey, and Russia. In 2013, he performed in Russia alongside the Red Army Choir. His global reach was so wide that his presence sometimes caused political tension. In 2019, Ukrainian politicians attempted to prevent him from performing in Kyiv due to his success in Russia. Cutugno rejected these claims, stating he was apolitical and had refused to perform in Crimea after its 2014 occupation.

Cutugno's personal life was marked by both family connection and health challenges. He was born in 1943 in Tendola, Tuscany, to a Sicilian father and a mother from Tuscany. He was married to his wife, Carla, from 1971 until his death. In 2007, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his kidneys. He underwent surgery to have his right kidney removed. He passed away at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan on 22 August 2023. He was 80 years old at the time of his death.
