He was born in a small cottage by the sea. As a young man, he worked as a teacher.

In 1873, John moved to the United States. While living in Boston, he fell on ice. He broke his leg in the fall. He used his time in the hospital to work on new designs. He wanted to make boats that could travel under the water. These are called submarines.

His first ideas were turned down by the US Navy. But John did not stop. He built a boat called Holland VI in 1897. This was a very special design. It used gasoline engines to move on top of the water. It used electric motors to move under the water.

The US Navy bought this boat in 1900. They named it the USS Holland. It was the first submarine used by the Navy. Other countries, like England and Japan, also used his ideas. John spent 56 years working on these boats. He died in New Jersey in 1914.
