He was born in Ribe, Denmark, on May 3, 1849. He grew up in a large family with 15 children. His father was a schoolteacher and a writer. Even as a young boy, Jacob showed a kind heart. When he was eleven, he gave his money to a poor family. He hoped it would help them clean their home. This early kindness stayed with him throughout his whole life.

In 1870, Jacob moved to the United States to find work.

He traveled from Denmark to New York City on a ship. He wanted to work as a carpenter. However, life in the big city was very difficult for him. He often had no money and no job. At one point, he even slept on a tombstone. He had to eat apples he found on the ground to survive. These hard times taught him what it felt like to be very poor.

Jacob eventually found a way to use his skills for good. He became a journalist and a photographer.

He used his camera to show the world how people lived in slums. These crowded areas were often dirty and full of disease. He took pictures of places like Mulberry Street to show the truth. He wanted the wealthy people of New York to see these problems. By showing the truth, he helped people understand why change was needed.

His work helped lead to real changes in how people lived.

He worked with others to create better types of housing. These were called "model tenements" to help families live more safely. Jacob was also very good with new technology. He was one of the first people to use a photographic flash. This helped him take clear pictures even in dark rooms. His books and photos made him a very famous social reformer.

Jacob also helped start a way to fight sickness.
