This book tried to solve a very strange puzzle. George noticed that even as technology improved, poverty stayed the same. He saw that new tools created much more wealth. Yet, many people still struggled to find enough to live on. He wanted to know why progress did not help everyone. This question made his book very important to many people.

George looked closely at how land and wealth work. He defined land as all natural materials and forces. This includes things like space, resources, and even natural opportunities. He noticed a pattern in how cities grow. When a city builds schools or roads, the land becomes more valuable. This value is called economic rent. George saw that land prices often rose faster than wages. This made it hard for workers to keep their money. It could even lead to a big business crash.

George found his ideas while traveling and observing the world. In 1871, he took a horseback ride near San Francisco Bay. He also visited New York City and saw a big difference. He noticed the poor in New York were doing worse than those in California. He saw how railroads in California made land prices rise very quickly. These observations helped him build his theory. He used history and logic to explain these changes. He wanted to find a way to make things fairer.

His solution was a single tax on land values.

This tax would be high enough to replace other taxes. It would focus on the value of the land itself. George believed this would help people use land more wisely. It could also pay for public services like transportation. This idea helped start a movement called Georgism. His book was a massive success in the late 1800s. It sold several million copies very quickly.

Many famous people felt changed after reading his work.

Authors like Leo Tolstoy and H. G. Wells were deeply moved. His book even helped spark the Progressive Era in America. This was a time when many people worked for social reform. The book was popular in many places like the United Kingdom and Australia. By 1906, his writing was more popular than Shakespeare in Britain. His ideas reached people all over the world. Even today, historians study the impact he had on how we think.
