George wanted to solve a big puzzle. He saw that new tools made more wealth. He saw that cities grew larger. Yet, many people stayed very poor. He looked at how things worked. He noticed that land was the key. George said land is all natural things. This includes things like space and resources.

As cities grow, land becomes more valuable. This happens because of public services like schools. George saw that land prices rose very fast. This made it hard for workers to earn money. He thought land owners took too much wealth. He suggested a new way. He proposed a single tax on land. This tax would pay for public services. It would also help people earn more wages.

His book was a huge success. It sold millions of copies. Many people in many countries read it. His ideas helped start a movement called Georgism. It even helped lead the Progressive Era. People all over the world studied his work.
