He was a great speaker and a talented writer. Many people in the North were surprised by his skills. Some even thought he was not telling the truth. They could not believe a former slave could speak so well. Douglass wrote books to prove his life story was real. These books helped many people understand why slavery was wrong.

Douglass learned that knowledge was a tool for freedom. When he was a young boy, Sophia Auld taught him the alphabet. Her husband, Hugh Auld, soon stopped her from teaching him. He believed that reading would make enslaved people want liberty. Douglass did not let this stop his learning. He taught himself by reading newspapers and books. He even helped other enslaved men learn to read on Sundays.

His early life in Maryland was very difficult. He was born around February 1818 in Talbot County. His mother was Harriet Bailey, and they were separated when he was a baby. He lived with his grandmother and grandfather for a time. Later, he was sent to live in Baltimore. He worked for people like Hugh and Sophia Auld. He also worked for a man named Edward Covey. Covey was a very harsh man who treated him poorly.

In 1838, Douglass made a brave choice to escape. He left Maryland and moved to the North. He settled in places like Massachusetts and New York. He changed his last name to Douglass. He met a free Black woman named Anna Murray and married her.
