He was one of the first people to use cameras in the Far East. His work showed the world new landscapes and different cultures. He captured images of people, old buildings, and special objects. This helped people in Britain see what life was like in far-away lands. His skill in telling stories through pictures was very important.

Taking photos in the 1800s was a very hard job. Thomson had to carry a large wooden camera with him. He also had to carry many fragile glass plates for his pictures. He even had to carry chemicals that could explode. He often had to find ways to work when chemicals were hard to get. In remote areas, many people had never even seen a camera before.

Thomson was born in Edinburgh in 1837. He was the eighth child in a large family of nine. After his school years, he learned about science and tools. He studied math and chemistry at the Watt Institution. By 1862, he decided to travel to Singapore to join his brother, William. William was already working as a watchmaker and a photographer there.

Thomson traveled through many different places during his life. He spent ten years in the Far East. He visited Singapore, Malaya, and the island of Sumatra. In 1866, he went to the ancient city of Angkor in Cambodia. He also traveled to China and stayed in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. He even traveled 3,000 miles up the Yangtze River. Later, he moved to London and worked for Queen Victoria.
