She was born Jane Isabel Butzner in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1916. Her parents were a teacher and a doctor. After finishing high school, she worked in a newspaper office. Later, she moved to New York City during the Great Depression. She lived in a neighborhood called Greenwich Village. This area was special because it did not follow a strict grid. Jane worked many different jobs in the city. She was a secretary and a freelance writer. These jobs helped her understand how people lived and worked.

Jane learned a lot by watching the streets of Manhattan. She studied many subjects at Columbia University. She took classes in law, economics, and even zoology. These studies helped her see the world in new ways. She eventually became an editor for a magazine called Architectural Forum. While working there, she began to look closely at city planning. She saw how new building projects changed neighborhoods. Some planners wanted to clear away old buildings. They called this "urban renewal." Jane saw that these plans often hurt the people living there. She noticed that new designs could end the life of a community.

In 1961, Jane published a very important book. It was called "The Death and Life of Great American Cities."

In this book, she shared new ideas about how cities work. She used the term "eyes on the street." This idea means that having people out and about makes streets safer. She also talked about "mixed primary uses." This means having different kinds of buildings near each other. Many experts were angry with her ideas. They called her a "housewife" because she had no formal training in planning. They did not think a woman should criticize their work. However, her ideas eventually became very famous among professionals.

Jane was also a leader in her own community.

She fought against big plans that would have changed her home. A leader named Robert Moses wanted to build a large highway. This road was called the Lower Manhattan Expressway. It would have gone through parts of Manhattan like SoHo and Chinatown. Jane organized people to stop the project. She was even arrested in 1968 during a public hearing about it. Her hard work helped stop the highway from being built. This saved many neighborhoods from being torn apart by big roads.

Jane Jacobs later moved to Toronto in 1968.

She continued her work there as an activist. She joined the fight to stop the Spadina Expressway. She wanted to protect cities from being filled with too many highways. Her life shows that one person can make a huge difference. Even without a special degree, she changed how experts design our world. Today, many people still study her ideas about urban life. She taught us that cities are made of people, not just buildings.
