In a walkable area, people can reach many things on foot. They might go to a shop or a school nearby. This makes the city feel livable and friendly.

Good walkability helps reduce the need to use cars for travel. It turns streets into spaces for people to enjoy.

Designing a walkable city uses three main ideas. These are called density, mix, and access. Density means having many buildings and people close together. Mix means having different things like homes and offices in one spot.

Access means having good paths like sidewalks and crosswalks. When these three things work together, people can move easily. This is often called the DMA system. It helps people navigate their neighborhoods well.

Long ago, walking was the main way to travel. This changed in the 1920s as cars became more common. After World War II, many more people began using automobiles.

She wanted cities to be full of life and activity. Her ideas helped start a new way of planning cities.

Many experts have studied walkability since then. In 1994, Lawrence D. Frank and Gary Pivo studied urban design and walking. In 2001, Frank and Engelke looked at how design helps health. Later, in 2003, researchers asked for a walkability index.

In 2004, a study linked walkability to obesity. A study in 2025 used smartphone data from two million people. It found that moving to a walkable city increased daily steps by 1,100. These facts show how much our surroundings matter.

Walkability brings many good things to a community. It can help people stay healthy and active. Walking can help prevent diseases like diabetes and heart problems.

It can even help people feel more happy and connected. People in walkable areas often feel more trust in their neighbors. This makes the whole city a better place to live. Designing for people instead of just cars makes life better.
