She lived in New York City. She worked as an editor. She wrote many stories about city life. Jane noticed that city plans often hurt people. Some leaders wanted to tear down old parts of the city. They called this "urban renewal." Jane thought these plans ignored the needs of people living there.

In 1961, she wrote a famous book. It was called *The Death and Life of Great American Cities*.

In her book, she spoke about "eyes on the street." This means that having people look out their windows helps keep streets safe. Many experts in city planning did not like her ideas. They said she was just a housewife with no training. But Jane was right about many things.

Jane also fought to save her own neighborhood. She worked to stop big roads from being built through her home.
