Valentia Island is a special place in the southwest of Ireland. It sits in Dingle Bay near the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry.

You can get to the island by crossing the Maurice O'Neill Memorial Bridge at Portmagee. A car ferry also travels from Reenard Point to Knightstown between April and October. The island's main town is Knightstown, and another village called Chapeltown sits near the middle. About 658 people live on the island permanently. It is the fifth-biggest island off the Irish coast. The name Valentia likely comes from the Irish name for the local harbour.

The island is a very wet place with an oceanic climate. It is actually the wettest weather station in all of Ireland. Even though it is far north, the winters stay mild. This happens because of warm winds from the North Atlantic Current. These warm winds protect the island from heavy frost and snow. Because of this, special plants can grow there that usually need glass houses. At Glanleam House, you can see gardens filled with plants from South America and Japan.

Valentia Island has a very important history with technology. It was the site of the first permanent link between Europe and North America. This link was a huge underwater telegraph cable.

People tried many times to lay the cable in 1857 and 1858. It finally worked in 1866 when the cable reached Heart's Content in Newfoundland. This allowed people to send messages across the ocean for the first time. These cables worked from the island for one hundred years. They finally stopped operating in 1966.

Scientists also use the island to study the very distant past. In 1993, a student found something amazing in the rocks at Dohilla. They found fossilised footprints left by early animals. These tracks were made about 385 million years ago near a river. This was a time when the area was a sub-equatorial river basin. These prints are among the oldest signs of life on land.

The island also has tall mountains and high sea cliffs. Geokaun Mountain is the highest point on the island.

Today, many people visit Valentia Island to see its many wonders. You can visit a heritage centre to learn about the old cable station. There is also a lighthouse at Cromwell's Point to help ships. The island is a great place for fishing, too. People there have caught record-sized fish like conger eels and rays. Some people even fly planes over the island, like Charles Lindbergh did in 1927. Whether you like history, nature, or the sea, there is much to discover here.
