A pond is a small, still body of water. It sits in a low dip in the land.

These water bodies are usually smaller than lakes. Scientists do not always agree on the exact rules to tell them apart. Some say a pond is shallow enough for plants to grow across the bottom. Others look at the size of the water's surface. A pond can be a very busy home for many different living things.

Many different things can make a pond. Nature can create them through many ways. Glaciers can leave uneven ground behind when they melt. This creates holes that fill with rain or groundwater.

Animals can also help make them. Beavers build dams to hold water back. Alligators dig holes that catch water too. People also make ponds for many reasons. We might build them to water farm animals or to make a garden look pretty.

People have used ponds for a very long time. In ancient Nepal, people made ponds to supply drinking water. These ponds caught rainwater or water from canals. In Europe, monks in monasteries often kept fish ponds. Even today, people use ponds for many jobs. Some ponds help stop flooding in towns by catching storm water.

Other ponds are used to grow fish for food. This is a practice called aquaculture.

There are many different sizes for ponds. The Ramsar wetland convention says a pond can be up to 8 hectares. That is about 20 acres. In the United States, some people say a pond is less than 10 acres. However, some famous places use the name even if they are large. Walden Pond in Massachusetts is 61 acres. Crystal Lake is 33 acres, but it is still called a lake.

You might see snails, beetles, or water bugs. Frogs, turtles, and fish also live there. Some ponds are called vernal pools if they dry up every year. These are special because big fish cannot live in them. This makes the ponds a safe place for baby frogs to grow.
