Mountain ranges sit on its sides. The Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats border the plateau. These mountains separate the plateau from the coast. The mountains also block rain. This makes the plateau much drier than the coast.

The ground is very rocky. It has an average height of 600 meters. Long ago, huge volcanoes erupted here. They left behind thick layers of dark rock. We call this area the Deccan Traps.

Many big rivers flow through this land. The Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri rivers are very important. Most of these rivers flow east toward the Bay of Bengal.

Many animals live in the woods here. You might find Bengal tigers or Indian elephants. People have lived in this region for a very long time. Many different kingdoms ruled this land in the past.
