Western Plateau

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Western Plateau is a very big area. It covers two thirds of Australia. This land sits in three parts. These are Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. It stretches from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Onslow. The cities of Perth and Albany are here. This area is about the size of Europe.

Most of the land is a desert. It is very dry and sandy. You might see rocks or stony ground. Small shrubs and grasses grow here. Rain is hard to find. It does not fall often. Most of the time, there is no water on the surface. Only a few waterholes stay full all year.

Few people live in this region. The weather can be quite hard. The air is often very dry. Cold winds blow from Antarctica in the summer. It also has steady rain in the winter. This makes the climate hard to live in. The land is part of an old rock shield. We call this the Gondwana shield. It is a vast and ancient place.
