It is also the flattest and second-driest continent. This means it is very low and has little rain. The continent sits in the Southern and Eastern hemispheres. It is part of a region called Oceania.

The continent has many parts. It includes mainland Australia and the island of Tasmania. It also includes the island of New Guinea. New Guinea holds the countries of Papua New Guinea and West Papua.

Long ago, the land was all joined together. Scientists call this landmass Sahul. During the ice age, the sea was much lower. Dry land connected the islands. Then, the sea rose and flooded the low areas. This created shallow seas like the Torres Strait.

Many people live on the continent. Indigenous Australians were the first people to live there. They arrived at least 50,000 years ago. Today, many people live in big cities in Australia. In Papua New Guinea, most people live in rural areas. This means they live in the country, not in cities.
