A continent is a very large area of land. Most people in English-speaking countries say there are seven continents. These are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. Asia is the largest of them all. Australia is the smallest.

Some continents are far apart. Antarctica and Australia sit all by themselves in the ocean. Other continents are joined by land. For example, Africa and Asia are connected. North and South America are also joined. Some people group these lands together. They might call them the Americas or Afro-Eurasia.

Geologists look at the Earth differently. They study the thick crust under the land. This crust sits on tectonic plates. They say a continent includes the dry land and the shallow sea floor near it. This part is called the continental shelf.

Long ago, the lands were not separate. They were one giant supercontinent called Pangaea. Over millions of years, the land broke apart. The pieces moved to where they are today. This is called continental drift.
