Life on the plain can be quite extreme. It is often called a "cold desert" or semi-arid zone. Summer days can be scorching hot. In the winter, nights often drop well below freezing. 

Today, the Nullarbor is a place for both farming and protection. Some people raise sheep on the edges of the plain. The Rawlinna Station is the largest sheep station in the world.

This member is separated from the upper layer by 5 million years. The Abrakurrie Limestone formed in a central depression. This layer is older, dating to the late Oligocene or early Miocene. Other layers include the Toolinna Limestone and the Wilsons Bluff Limestone. These layers date back to the Eocene epoch. The complex layering shows how the seabed changed over millions of years.
Human history in the region is long and varied. Indigenous Australian groups, such as the Mirning and Yinyila clans, seasonally occupied the land. They called the area Oondiri, meaning "the waterless." In the 1600s, Dutch explorers Pieter Nuyts and François Thijssen mapped the coast. They named the area "Landt van P. Nuyts." Much later, in 1841, Edward John Eyre became the first European to cross the plain. His journey was extremely difficult due to a lack of water. He survived with the help of an Aboriginal man named Wylie. In 1865, Edmund Delisser recorded the names Nullarbor and Eucla in his journal.
The climate of the Nullarbor is quite extreme. It is classified as a cold desert or semi-arid zone. 
Despite the harsh conditions, many species live here. The plain is a desert and xeric shrubland ecoregion. Xeric means a very dry environment. The vegetation includes low saltbush and bluebush scrub. Animals like red kangaroos and dingoes roam the open areas. The southern hairy-nosed wombat burrows into the sand to escape the heat. The many caves provide unique habitats. They host colonies of wattled microbats and specialized insects. An elusive subspecies of the Australian masked owl also roosts in these caves. 
Today, the Nullarbor is used for both industry and conservation. Some areas on the fringe are used for sheep grazing. The Rawlinna Station is the largest sheep station in the world.
