It sits along the southern coast of Australia. Much of it lies south of the Nullarbor Plain. This plain is a very flat area of land.

Some people say the bay is part of the Indian Ocean. Others say it is part of the Southern Ocean.

The coastline has many tall cliffs and rocky points.

These cliffs make it a great place for whale-watching. Southern right whales visit the bay in winter. They come here to breed and have babies. The Australian sea lion also lives near these cliffs.

The water is full of life. Deep ocean water moves up to the coast. This brings food to the surface. This food helps many tiny creatures called zooplankton grow. These tiny bits of food help fish like tuna.

This bay formed 50 million years ago. It happened when a supercontinent called Gondwana broke apart. This split Antarctica away from Australia. People have fished here for a long time. Some companies wanted to look for oil and gas. Many people spoke out to protect the environment.
