It sits between Australia and the island of Timor. To the east, it meets the Arafura Sea.

Parts of the sea are very shallow. Other parts are very deep. One deep spot is the Timor Trough. It is more than 3,300 metres deep. The sea also has many reefs and islands.

Large storms called cyclones often pass through. These storms can be very strong. The sea can also have earthquakes.

There is much oil and gas under the sea floor. People use these to make power and fuel. In 2009, a large oil spill happened here.

Finding these resources led to some arguments. Australia and Timor-Leste had to make treaties. These treaties help decide who owns the oil and gas. Long ago, early humans may have crossed this sea. They might have moved from island to island to reach Australia.
