Human history in the Timor Sea spans thousands of years. It is possible that Australia's first inhabitants arrived by island-hopping. This may have occurred when sea levels were much lower. During the 1940s, the sea became a site of conflict during World War II. The Japanese navy used the area to launch air raids against Australia. On 19 February 1942, the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga launched strikes against Darwin. This event marked the start of the Battle of Timor in the Pacific theatre.
Today, the sea is economically vital due to its hydrocarbon reserves. These reserves consist of significant amounts of oil and natural gas. The Big John rig confirmed these prospects in 1974. One major operation is the Bayu-Undan project, which began production in 2004. This project uses a subsea pipeline to send gas to Darwin. Another massive field is the Ichthys gas field, discovered in 2000. First gas from Ichthys was achieved on 30 July 2018. These resources provide immense revenue for the involved nations.
However, managing these resources has caused international friction. Disputes arose over the ownership of the Timor Gap. This is the area outside the official territorial boundaries of the northern and southern nations. For many years, Australia and Timor-Leste disagreed on maritime boundaries. Australia previously claimed a line based on the depth of the seabed. Timor-Leste argued for a median line between the two countries. In 2013, a spying scandal emerged involving the Australian Secret Intelligence Service.
Environmental risks also accompany the industrial use of the sea. In 2009, the Montara oil field experienced a major leak. This event caused the worst oil spill in the region for 25 years. The leak lasted from 21 August to 3 November 2009. During this time, large amounts of oil and gas escaped daily.
