Early inhabitants included Papuan and Austronesian peoples. These migrations created a diverse mix of cultures and languages. Austronesian settlers may have introduced agriculture to the island. Ancient political life involved interconnected polities governed by customary law. These were organized into small communities centered around sacred houses. These communities formed larger kingdoms led by a leader called a liurai. Authority was split between the worldly power of the liurai and the spiritual power of a rai nain.

European contact began through the global sandalwood trade. Sandalwood was highly valued for perfume and crafting. By the fourteenth century, Timor was part of major trading networks involving China and India. This trade attracted Portuguese explorers in the sixteenth century. The Portuguese established a presence on nearby islands first. They eventually moved to the island of Timor. Effective occupation in the east began with the founding of Dili in 1769.

The twentieth century brought significant political and military changes. During World War II, Japan occupied Dili starting in 1942. This led to the Battle of Timor, a guerrilla campaign. This conflict resulted in the deaths of 40,000 to 70,000 East Timorese civilians. Following the war, Portuguese control resumed. In 1975, political shifts led to a civil war. The Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) declared independence in November 1975. However, Indonesia invaded and annexed the territory shortly after.

The period of Indonesian occupation from 1975 to 1999 was marked by extreme violence. This era is referred to as the East Timor genocide.

Resistance continued despite these hardships. In 1999, a United Nations-sponsored referendum allowed for self-determination. The vote resulted in a clear choice for independence. A multinational peacekeeping force called INTERFET was deployed to restore order.
