As the nation's economic hub, Dili manages much of the country's trade. It also serves as the chief port for Timor-Leste.

The history of Dili began with early maritime trade. In the 15th century, Timor was likely a source for sandalwood. This fragrant wood was highly valued. The first recorded Portuguese voyage arrived in 1516. By 1524, regular trade was established. In the 1600s, the Netherlands began to compete for control. This competition was especially strong in the west. In 1641, many local kings converted to Catholicism. They did this to seek protection from the Portuguese. This changed the relationship from purely economic to political.

Dili officially became the capital in 1769. The Portuguese governor, António José Teles de Meneses, moved the administration there. He moved 1,200 people to the new site. The location was chosen for its favorable geography. The original settlement was in the eastern old quarter. It was part of the Motael kingdom. The area featured wetlands fed by mountain rivers. These wetlands were good for growing rice.

A wall was even built to separate the city from the southern wetlands.

As the city grew, its physical structure changed. In 1834, a governor rebuilt the settlement using a grid system. This expansion moved south into the drained wetlands. The city became centered on its port. This port area held government buildings and trade facilities. By the late 19th century, more permanent buildings appeared. In 1863, Dili was officially declared a city. It became directly subordinate to the government in Lisbon.

World War II brought significant destruction to the city. Although Portugal was neutral, the Pacific War reached Timor. In 1941, Allied troops arrived in Dili. Soon after, Japanese forces invaded the city.

After the war, the city was rebuilt under Portuguese control. However, new conflicts emerged in 1975. A civil war led to an invasion by Indonesia.

Under Indonesian rule, Dili saw new infrastructure and growth. The population increased to over 100,000 people. Landmarks like the Cristo Rei of Dili were built.

However, this period was also marked by hardship. Resistance to rule led to violent repression. A massacre in Dili caused international pressure. This eventually led to an independence referendum. Following the vote, more violence destroyed much of the city's infrastructure.

After a period of United Nations rule, Dili became the capital of an independent Timor-Leste in 2002. The city has continued to face challenges. Violence in 2006 caused more displacement and damage. In response, the government launched the City of Peace campaign in 2009. Today, the city is expanding rapidly. The urban area now reaches into coastal areas to the east and west.
