It is located southwest of the city of Hobart. The cape is also east and slightly south of South West Cape. This land marks a very important spot on our map.

This cape marks a line between two huge oceans. One ocean is the Pacific Ocean. The other ocean is the Indian Ocean.

The International Hydrographic Organization says this is the dividing line. This means the two oceans meet right here. Sailors use this cape as a reference point. It helps them know which part of the coast they are near. It is one of five southern capes that sailors can round.

South East Cape is the southernmost point of the main island. However, it is not the southernmost part of the state. Some islands sit much further south than the cape. The Maatsuyker Islands are just offshore. The Pedra Branca island group is also nearby.

There are other parts of Tasmania far away. Macquarie Island is part of the state. It sits about 1,600 km southeast of South East Cape.

The area near the cape is very busy. Much sea traffic passes near this point. The waters can be quite difficult for boats. Many ships and boats have been wrecked there. Some have even grounded on the land.

Think about how big the world is. This cape sits at the edge of a large island. It connects the land to the great oceans.
