It sits in the Western Cape province. This place is the southern tip of Africa. It marks the start of a special line. This line divides the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The cape is in the Overberg region. It is 170 kilometres southeast of Cape Town. Sailors often call it the "Cape of Needles."

The ocean moves in a very interesting way here. The warm Agulhas Current flows south along Africa's east coast. Then, it turns back into the Indian Ocean. This turn is called retroflecting. As it turns, it pinches off large ocean circles. These are called Agulhas rings. They drift into the South Atlantic Ocean. They carry much heat and salt with them. This helps move heat around our whole world.

People have known about this place for a long time. Portuguese navigators named it around the year 1500. They called it Cabo das Agulhas. This means "Cape of Needles" in Portuguese. They chose this name for a special reason. They noticed the compass needle pointed to true north here. This happened because magnetic north and true north matched up. Later, English speakers called it Cape L'Agulhas.

The environment at the cape is quite unique. The coastline has both rocky and sandy beaches. The rocks belong to the Table Mountain Group. These are the same rocks found at Table Mountain. The weather is a warm Mediterranean climate. It stays mild throughout the year. There are no extreme temperatures or rainfall. Most of the 400 to 600 mm of rain falls in winter.

Traveling by sea near the cape can be hard. Strong winds and different currents meet in this area. The cold Antarctic current hits the warm Agulhas Current. This can create rogue waves up to 30 metres high. These waves are big enough to sink large ships. About 150 ships have sunk around Agulhas. Because of this, a lighthouse was built in 1848.

Today, the lighthouse has a museum and a restaurant. The nearby Agulhas Bank is a great place for fishing.
