The coast is littered with the wrecks of many vessels. Notable examples include the Arniston, which sank in 1815, and the Geortyrder in 1849. Other lost ships include the Elise in 1879, the Cooranga in 1964, the Gwendola in 1968, the Federal Lakes in 1975, and the Gouritz in 1981. These shipwrecks highlight the dangers posed by the combination of strong winds, shallow banks, and colliding currents.

To protect sailors from these dangers, a lighthouse was constructed in 1848.
