The Black War was a period of intense conflict in Tasmania. At the time, the island was known as Van Diemen's Land. The war involved British colonists and the Aboriginal Tasmanian people. It lasted from the mid-1820s until 1832. This period of violence led to the near-extermination of the indigenous population.

Many contemporary historians describe these events as a genocide. However, some argue that colonial authorities did not intend to destroy the population. Historian Lyndall Ryan has suggested the conflict be called the "Tasmanian War."

British presence on the island began in September 1803. They established a military outpost at Risdon Cove on the Derwent River. Initially, the British and Aboriginal people coexisted with only sporadic violence. This early violence was often caused by the kidnapping of Aboriginal women and children. In 1804, Lieutenant Governor David Collins arrived with instructions to punish violence against Aboriginal people. However, he failed to publish these instructions. This left the legal framework for handling conflict very unclear.

As the colony grew, the conflict intensified. Between 1815 and 1830, the British population rose from 2,000 to 24,000 people. The number of sheep grew to 680,000 and cattle reached 100,000. This rapid expansion occupied many Aboriginal hunting grounds. As native game like the kangaroo disappeared, Aboriginal people faced hunger. This led to many Aboriginal people plundering settler homes for food.

Historian Nicholas Clements notes that this expansion led to an Aboriginal resistance movement.

Violence increased significantly after 1824. Aboriginal attacks on colonists rose from an average of 1.7 per year to 18 per year. Settlers often responded with violent reprisal raids. In 1826, Governor George Arthur issued a notice treating hostile Aboriginal groups as open enemies. This allowed settlers to use arms to force them from settled districts.

Between December 1826 and July 1827, at least 140 Aboriginal people were killed. By March 1828, the death toll reached 43 colonists and up to 350 Aboriginal people.

In 1828, Governor Arthur issued the "Proclamation Separating the Aborigines from the White Inhabitants." This plan aimed to move Aboriginal people to a reserve in the north-east. He deployed almost 300 troops to 14 military posts to enforce this. In 1830, the British attempted a massive military operation called "the Black Line." The goal was to force Aboriginal nations out of the settled districts. However, this military operation was unsuccessful in its primary goal.

Following the failure of the Black Line, a different approach was taken. In 1830 and 1831, George Augustus Robinson led "Friendly Missions." He worked with Aboriginal negotiators to secure a surrender of the belligerents.

Martial law was finally revoked in January 1832. Between 1832 and 1835, almost all remaining Aboriginal people were removed from mainland Tasmania. They were relocated to the Wybalenna Aboriginal Mission on Flinders Island.

The consequences for the Aboriginal population were devastating. At the Wybalenna mission, infectious diseases and low birth rates caused many deaths. When the mission closed in 1847, only 46 people remained. This was a massive decline from the original population of 3,000 to 7,000 people. The term "Black War" was coined by journalist Henry Melville in 1835. Today, historians continue to study this era to understand the complex causes of the conflict.
