A colonial war is a conflict arising from foreign powers settling overseas territories to create colonies. While scholars categorize wars into conquest, liberation, or state-to-state conflicts, the term "colonial war" typically describes a war of conquest. In these scenarios, an invading power seeks absolute and permanent control over a territory and its population. This differs from regular wars between neighboring states, which often have limited goals.

Colonial powers aim for total stability to ensure their rule lasts indefinitely.

These conflicts generally follow a specific two-stage mechanism. The first stage involves brief, regular warfare between an invading force and an indigenous population. The indigenous forces may be less organized or more irregular than the invaders. The second stage transitions into irregular warfare. During this time, invading powers may conduct counter-insurgency operations to prepare the land for settlement. Once a foothold is established, the invader might launch expeditions into neighboring areas to neutralize potential enemies or respond to hostility.

Colonial wars possess several distinct characteristics that separate them from traditional military conflicts. Because they are highly political, the goals are often more absolute than in regular wars. However, the resources provided for these campaigns are frequently limited. Victory and defeat are also harder to define. This is because the invading power often faces opponents without a single centralized government or ruler.

Without a central authority to capture, administering conquered people is difficult.

To manage these territories, colonial armies often rebuild public entities like markets and schools. For example, Americans did this in the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. Unlike regular armies, colonial soldiers are often professional forces stationed far from their home countries. They develop unique military cultures based on direct experience rather than formal education. These soldiers often remain active in the colonies while regular armies in their home nations stay idle.

This constant activity shapes their specific tactics and discipline.

History shows that colonial warfare became prevalent in the late 15th century. Many of the most famous conflicts occurred in Africa and Asia during the 19th century.

The era of these wars is generally considered to have ended after the Portuguese Colonial War in 1974. Some historians argue the Falklands War of 1982 was the final true colonial war. These conflicts were significant because they led to the first formal studies of counter-insurgency practices and irregular warfare.

Technological and logistical factors played a major role in these struggles. European armies were typically technically superior and highly disciplined. However, heavy artillery required roads, which were often missing in colonial territories. Deploying cavalry also presented massive logistical challenges. Indigenous forces often used guerrilla tactics to resist, such as the hit-and-run methods used in the Franco-Hova Wars. Leaders like Samori Ture of the Wassoulou Empire resisted European control for many years by avoiding traditional pitched battles.

These wars often involved harsh policies against non-combatants and local economies. To force submission, invading powers sometimes burned villages, stole cattle, or destroyed crops. The French used these methods in Algeria, and the Germans used them during the Herero Wars in southern Africa. In extreme cases, such as the conflict with the Herero, these actions led to the Herero and Namaqua genocide. These tactics were often used when there was no central government for the invader to seize, making the local population the primary target of subjugation.

In North America, colonial wars had their own unique patterns. Early conflicts often took place in the wilderness and were fought by Spanish conquistadors or British settlers. Many British colonists used a militia system consisting of all able males aged 16 to 60. These militias often defended their own homes or patrolled frontiers as "rangers."

Native American tribes often used horses for hit-and-run attacks. While some tribes formed powerful coalitions, such as the Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne, they often faced economic and industrial disadvantages against the United States.
