It took place from January to July 1879. The British Empire fought against the Zulu Kingdom. This war was a turning point in colonial history. It challenged the idea that the British military was invincible. The conflict changed the political landscape of the region forever.

The war was driven by a British plan for confederation. Lord Carnarvon was the British Secretary of State for the Colonies. He wanted to unite various territories into one federation. This would include British colonies, Boer republics, and African kingdoms. The goal was to create a ruling white minority. This system would provide cheap labor for sugar plantations and mines. Such labor was highly valued after diamonds were discovered in 1867.

Sir Bartle Frere arrived in 1874 as the High Commissioner. He was tasked with making this confederation a reality. Frere saw the Zulu Kingdom as a major obstacle. He believed the Zulu military strength threatened British interests. To force a conflict, Frere sent an ultimatum to King Cetshwayo. This document demanded the Zulu army be disbanded. It also required the Zulus to accept a British resident.

King Cetshwayo could not accept these terms. Accepting them would mean losing his authority as king. Therefore, Lord Chelmsford was ordered to invade Zululand. The war began with a massive Zulu victory at Isandlwana.

This defeat shocked the British Empire. It proved that a well-organized indigenous force could defeat British troops. Shortly after, a small British garrison defended Rorke's Drift.

This battle became a famous example of British defense.

The Zulu Kingdom had a long and complex history. Shaka Zulu had originally built the kingdom through conquest. By 1825, the kingdom covered a large area. Later, King Mpande ruled the empire for many years.

After Mpande died in 1872, his son Cetshwayo took the throne. The Zulus were a powerful and organized society. They had a strong military tradition that shaped their entire culture. This strength made them a formidable opponent for the British.

The tide of the war eventually turned in favor of the British. They gained the upper hand at the Battle of Kambula. Following this, British forces moved toward the Zulu capital, Ulundi.

The British eventually won the war. They first made the Zulu Kingdom a protectorate. In 1887, the British officially annexed the territory. This ended Zulu dominance in the region. The war resulted in significant loss of life and political change.

The war had major consequences for British politics in London. The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli faced great pressure. People were unhappy with various overseas wars and famines. The Zulu War was one of several issues causing trouble. In 1880, Disraeli's government was ejected from office. It lasted only one term. This shows how colonial conflicts can affect leaders far away.
